Resident parking - Information

Resident parking areas make parking easier for residents in many districts of Cologne. By displaying the relevant permit, they can park their vehicle in most of the bays available in these areas "around the clock".

What does the resident parking mean for residents?

The public parking bays created in the district cost money during normal business hours on working days, with a flexible parking rule for residents.

The rule stipulates that residents with a permit have particular preference when parking. The parking permit allows you to park for free at parking meters marked with a red dot, and you don't even have to keep to the maximum four-hour limit applicable to other parkers. However, this does not mean you are entitled to reserve a specific parking bay.

You can request the parking permit if

  • your main or secondary residence is registered as being on one of the streets containing resident parking, and
  • you don't have your own private parking bay.

If you have more than one place of residence in the metropolitan area, you can only request a permit for one parking district.

What does resident parking mean for businesspeople?

Businesspeople and freelancers based in the resident parking district can be given a permit exempting them from coin-operated parking at meters marked with a red dot. The pre-requisites for this are that

  • your job requires a car, and
  • you don't have your own parking bay.

And for other persons looking for parking?

If you don't have a resident parking permit, the parking bays are available for use during the day at a charge.

Some resident parking districts also have long-term parking bays, which cost 4 Euros for 24 hours.
